Use the gradient fill (linear for rectangles, or radial for circles) - set the inside colour to be 100% alpha (through the MIXER panel), and the outer colour to be the SAME AS THE INNER COLOUR< EXCEPT 0% ALPHA. If the 2 colours are the same, it will look like a monochromatic glow. Try making the outside colour different, but still 0% alpha, for different effects.
thanks for your reply. how can i adjust the alpha for a radial gradient's inside and outside color? I know that an object that has been converted into a "graphic" instance can have alpha adjusted..but how do you adjust a gradient color?
Open the FILL panel. Choose either RADIAL or LINEAR fill. Click on the left hand colour tab on the gradient display box. look at the right hand side of the FILL panel - there is a little coloured box you can use as a picker. Select a colour (say blue, for example). Open your MIXER panel. Look at the right hand side of the MIXER panel - there's a box there labeled "Alpha". Change that value to 0. Now your coloured tab has a colour value of blue, with an alpha of 0 (meaning that it is transparent blue).
