I know this seems like a simple question, but I've tried searching for an answer and have yet to find one. How can you add an animated gif (one that's saved to your hard drive) to your signature, without paying for third-party software?

I'm using Outlook 2000. I've made sure the message format was HTML. When I try to add the animated GIF using "advanced edit", the GIF comes out as a still image. It opens Word as the "advanced" editor. Maybe there's a way to save the GIF file as an HTML file. Hmmm...

Thanks in advance,
cdogg

In outlook ensure that the tools->options and mail format tab are set to "send messages in HTML", "set word as e-mail editor" and "send pictures from internet" (not sure this is needed).

Then in word, go to tools -> options and the "general" tab, and click e-mail options.

Create a new signature and just insert the Gif image, (can copy/save one from another email, web, etc).

Then use that signature

a couple of things you can do here....best is to create a signature from a HTML page and always use that sig when sending mails.
To do this, you can use Word, start a word doc and insert the gif into the page, and any other text you wish. (you can use HTML code here to create moving text etc)
When you have the page you want, go to File->Save As and save it as a HTML page on your desktop. Now go to Outlook and making sure you have sending in HTML enabled, go to Tools->Options and in here go to the Mail Format Tab, and down the bottom click on Signature Picker.
Click on New, enter a name for your signature, (EG 'my signature'), and down the bottom click on, use file as template, then click browse. Go to your desktop, and select your new HTML page. Click next and then Finish.
Now you have a signature that you can insert to a mail when composing by goin to Insert->signature and choose yours...
You can set this as default, so that it will always be there when you start a new mail...go to Tools-.Options and mail format again, and down the bottom choose your signature as the one to use by default.

Another thing to note is, when you are composing the mail, and you have the gif inserted, it will not animate. You have to send it and then look at the sent items to see it animate, or save it as a draft and you can look at it. Also, if the person receiving the mail cannot recieve HTML mail, the gif will not come in on the page, but as an attachment. Not everyone can get HTML mails.....there are alot of people that can only recieve Plain Text mails, alot of Internet Mail accounts are like that.....

anyway good luck in what you do! Jay~

Jay,

I think you've solved my problem. I haven't tried the procedure you mentioned above, but I was able to create a signature with the animated GIF, though the GIF didn't appear to be animated. If it is true that it won't be animated while you are composing the email, then I was mistaken to think that I even had a problem.

Originally, I did have "sending in HTML" enabled, but did not choose Word as my mail editor. However, when I went through the signature picker, edited my existing signature using advanced edit, Word 97 popped up as the editor. I inserted the GIF and took a peak at how the signature would look by opening a new email. Of course, it was a still image. I didn't realize that you had to wait to send the email before you would to see the animation.

I will try it out first chance I get...thanks

It didn't work! :-0

I tried sending a test message to myself and another email address that accepts HTML. Neither returned an animated GIF, just a still image of the GIF.

I'm confused at this point. I tried your procedure above, but it didn't make a difference. I think it's the fact that Word 97 is the "advanced" editor and can't insert an animated GIF correctly...

ok, when using Outlook 2000, DONT use word as the editor, and when composing a new mail...go to Insert->Picture, and browse to your gif file. I have just tried it and turns out that the gif actually DOES animate before its sent!
Im using Outlook 2000 too. And NOT using Word (2000) as my editor... Jay~

Jay,

No question about that, it worked just fine. However, there has to be a way to make it part of the signature so I don't have to go to "Insert->Picture" every time. Also, I NEVER had Word as my mail editor.

Thanks,
cdogg

O but there is!!

While editing your signarure, right mouse click on white space and click insert image.

click browse and find your animated gif.

ps has all the worlds flags animated

Much Luck

mscallisto,

I can't believe it was that simple. If you check the previous posts, you would think we've tried everything. Microsoft should have included this option under "advanced edit" instead of hiding it in a simple "right-click"!

Many thanks...
