animated gif file not animating when opening

I am just learning how to animate layers, which works such as a phone number flashing in an email ad. but when I send the email to someone else the number is not flashing. I am saving as a gif. When i open it on mine I have to press play the start the flashing.
What good is that? I know there's something I should be doing but am not sure what? The original file was created in layers and saved as psd. Then I anitmated one layer. On, off, etc. and it works how I want when I press the play button.
Can anyone help.

How did you save the final GIF?
Select All => Optimize Animation => Save Optimized As?

I saved optimized as. How do I optimize animation?
under optimized I saved as gif 64 dithered.
before saving it is a psd, with one layer animated, When I save it as gif, the frames are still separated. Then I have to press the play button.
Also what does "dithered" mean. It looks bad I think when I use "dither"

From memory:-
Right facing arrow on the right of the animation screen.
Select => Optimize Animation then save optimised as from the File? menu.
Saving as PSD will only save the base file not an animation.
