I know the old one had the 7 steps with the coronas and whatnot, but I have the objectives outline for the new A+ Essentials, and I don't see anything about the steps or the individual parts. I just took the test yesterday (and passed), and there was nothing even close it it on the exam.. Did they ditch the printer techy stuff?? Maybe it's on one of the specialist exams? Just wondering if I learned it for nothing, because I sure know it never comes up in the field except as trivia or trying to impress secretaries.

Don't really know how Comptia figures out what to put on the tests. The person who would know is glister though.

By the way, Congrats on passing!!!!

Below are the pertinent objectives from each exam pertaining to printers. As you can see, they are primarily concerned with true operational and diagnostic characteristics. 603 & 604 both mention "describe the process..." This is where you MIGHT run into the California Cows Won't Dance The Fandango. CCWDTF. Cleaning, Conditioning, Writing, Developing, Transferring, Fusing.

Essentials

4.1 Identify the fundamental principles of using printers and scanners
4.2 Identify basic concepts of installing, configuring, optimizing and upgrading printers and scanners
4.3 Identify tools, basic diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques for printers and scanners

602 adds
4.4 Perform preventive maintenance of printers and scanners

603
3.1 Identify the fundamental principles of using printers and scanners
• Describe processes used by printers and scanners including laser, ink dispersion, impact, solid ink and thermal printers. BINGO!!!

604
3.1 Identify the fundamental principles of using printers and scanners
• Describe the processes used by printers and scanners including laser, inkjet, thermal, solid ink, and impact printers AGAIN!!!

Ahh 604 has it, so I bet Essentials doesn't have it at all.
Essentials was remarkably easy, btw. I think they way it used to be was that the OS portion and the hardware portion both had easy and hard questions on them. But now I suspect that Essentials has a combination of OS and hardware, but it's all easy questions. Then the specialist exams will also have hardware+software, but it will be tougher. I have no specifically read this anywhere (wasn't really looking for it), but the more I look at the outlines, the more I think that's true. I didn't even study for the exam, and I still got an 815/900, just due to experience in the field. From what I understand, the older exams had enough "trivia" on them that a person who has field experience might not pass without at least memorizing some tables and whatnot.
