Android phone contacts app crashes

Every time my wife tries to open the contacts on her Samsung Mesmerize, the app crashes. When she wants to make a call, she is able to start typing in the 'phone' and the matching contacts appear, so they are present on the phone, but the contacts app returns an 'android error in module....' type error.

she has opened a problem ticket with our cellular carrier and they have acknowledged that she is not the only one, but have no fix. it really is annoying!

anyone else have this problem? found a solution?
