Analysing images?

I've done this in Java, but wonder if it's possible in a scripting language...

Is it possible to break down images, jpg or whatnot into different image components, RGB, black and white, etc, to do image analysis? I'm eventually going to be doing recognition on images for certain patterns.

If it can't be done in Perl, do you have any other recommendations?

Sure, you can do that with Perl.
Perl has powerful instructions for bitwise operations.

Have you tried searching CPAN for "image"?

There is also Image::Magick:

but as far as coding your own routines to analyze images, I don't have any experience with that.
