Hi I am trying to figure out what to do with 4 spare external modems I have. I am working on my CCNP and now I am staring at 4 bright shiney objects and I want to do something with them. Can modems be connected simply by telephone wires and then connect them to a router via the RS port on the back of the modem? Or do you need a simulator box to provide signaling for the modems? I have already passed the remote access exam, this is considered play but at the same time trying to work a problem out. Any ideas or suggestins?
Thanks

Get a Teltone POTS simulator on ebay, will run ya about $100 or so...ISDN simulation is more expensive. If you have money to burn, get an ADTRAN 550 with FR/POTS/ISDN (what the network academies use for remote access).

Thanks...yeah I'll run right out and get a 550...freakin thing is $2k and no interfaces. Yup was really interested after seeing what it could do, then my jaw hit the desk on the price. Teltone sims for POTS ok I'll give that one a whirl. Any true trick to making these work for the network lab or do the instructions pretty much do a good job?

thanks for the idea. I've looked at the ISDN sims and have been thinking about a vconsole, as one of them comes with a PRI. I've played with the ISDN in production, but only enough to get it working, not enough to understand it completely. I dont think my boss would really like me doinking around on a production connection. That is why I'm looking at something that will do PRI eventually. Any good suggestions or are simulated connectors the only way to go in this department?

Thanks

ET...Get a real job! But that would cut into the beer time!

But really, I have gotten the PairGains to work on the ether side but I haven't tried any ISDN or AUX port configs yet. I'm still playing around with the damn Token Ring ports! Who came up with that idea???

I think (and thats the scary part) if you get ahold of a "extra" set of pairgains with ether cards you should be able to trick the ISDN ports to pass traffic. I'll call you sometime and give you my theory set up.
