My group has a brand new IBM server, which is cabled into an HMC console. However, when I tried to open a console window, I got a message like this:

The session is reserved for physical serial port communication.

My question:

1) Do I have to have a mornitor physically connected to the box through a serial port?

2) If not, what should I do next?

3) If yes, once I have a mornitor connected to the box through a serial port, should I install the OS first before I can release the session to the HMC console?

I am new to all this setup stuff and your inputs are highly appreciated.

Sounds like the LPAR is in MDC.

Activate the LPAR from the HMC, go to SMS if there is no OS installed yet, and it should ask if you want to come out of MDC, then the LPAR should use the HMC instead of the serial ports for the console.

thank you for your help. but I am so new to this, please bear with me for asking such entry level questions.

How to "go to SMS"?

Should I restart partition? If I chose "restart partition", I have two choices: dump or immediate. Which one to choose?

when I check the profile, the default setting is --

"automatically start when the managed system is powered on"

The other two choices are:
1) enable connection monitoring
2) enable redundant error path reporting

And the boot modes is "system management services (SMS)".

Again, I can barely understand all these. Thank you for your further help.
