I've been using framesets to choose a link from the left menu and display it in the right frame. Is there another way to do it?

If I use a 2 column table I could put the navigation menu on the left. The plus side is that the navigation is several levels deep and it could get as wide as needed regardless of the number of levels. But we use a lot of Excel and Powerpoint files, and I don't want them to open a new window. How would I get them to display in the right column of a table? A bookmark, and include or ??? The other downside compared to frames is that if I scroll down the sheet in the right column of the table, the navigation on the left disappears (scrolls up out of view)

Any ideas?

One way to do it is by using the <IFRAME>. This is an inline frame which comes in very hansy for what you are talking about. You can place it in any part of a table and it will work. The drawback is that the user has to have a later browser for it to work. Here is more on it.
Hope this helps.
