Ok after yet another virus outbreak, maybe it's time we hit Virus writers where it hurts, their, egos.
I think we should stop calling a virus such cool and funky names, "Blaster", "Netsky", "Nimda"
Let's start naming them "Muppet-A", "Moron-B" "Written by sad loser without a girlfriend-L" or even "Enjoy-Prison-321432"

Just a thought, to keep me sane.

The future is already here - it's just not widely distributed yet...

In addition to this, how about forcing those convicted of authoring/deliberately distributing to do community service in tidying up their "works" - after all, the chance is quite likely that they would have quite good computer knowledge.

Although I agree that it seems a shame to allow computer talent to go to waste, I know I wouldn't let any of these folk touch my network.

How would the public know the newscasters are talking about a virus...they might think its a report on the legislature:

"And in other news a new outbreak of Moron occured today, following last week's infection of NeedsToBeKilled, experts think this one epison is going to cost us in the millions"

I agree that no self respecting network admin would want a criminal convicted of virus writing or computer misuse, but how else would the individuals that created viruses see first hand the damage that they cause?

I came into IT security by accident, first by removing viruses from a client's PC that had not had an antivirus update for 2 years, and more recently having seen a network of almost 1000 PC's all brought down by the blaster virus - because the IT staff were too drowned in work to take preventative maintenance in patching systems with Windowsupdate as new items were released.

Seeing these gave me a shock and realised just how lucky I have been, and since then I have tried within this forum to assist where possible.

My first responsibility is to protecting my network, not rehabilitating sociopaths.

But I'm willing to compromise. How 'bout I just tie him/her to a chair in my office with his/her genitalia wired up to a hand-cranked generator on my desk. When I have to spend time defending against the twerp's handiwork, I get crank that handle for 10 or 12 seconds.

It's a win-win situation. He/She gets an object lesson, and I can vent my frustration and get an upper-body workout.

OK, it seems long hours and toooooooooo much coffee and years of dumb ass users is starting to have an affect on the IT community!

What about the Anikova virus? Would that have spread if it was called Lisa Reilly Virus (for Brits) or the Rosanne_Virus (for the Yanks?).
