Greetings from Denmark,

We have Websphere MQ V5.3 running Windows 2000 sending data to Z/OS.

Yesterday we experienced failures in the programs that read/write to the MQ queues. Error msg. MQRC_BACKED_OUT which is either "logs full" or "long running trans".

We use circular logging and all 5 logs were full (each 1MB). Plenty of space on the harddisk. I tried manually to delete the data in the primary log, but no luck. I stopped the trans and started it again, but it still gave the same error almost immediately. Because of that I think the problem must be a faulty wrap around (somehow).

We switched servers to get the production system up and running, but I fear the problem is dormant and will pop up one day again - probably sooner than I think.

Read everything on the Web and in the manuals, but have yet to find a clue.

Has anyone experienced anything like this??

Regards
Kirsten

Looks like you have a 'hung' unit of work somewhere. You really shouldn't try and do anything with the logs manually. The fact that you have circular logging means that MQ will automagically reuse the logs if it can.

How full are your queues? Remember that persistant messages are written to the logs. The size of the logs required will depend upon the projected throughput and the persistency of the messages. If you need to increase the size of the logs then I am afraid you will have to delete and recreate the queue manager. Never fear though...there is a support pack that you can download for free from IBM that will save all the MQ object definitions so that you can restore the definitions to the newly created queue manager. The support pack is MS03 (for windows).

Of course deleting and recreating the queue managers will destroy any messages in the queues so you will have to either back them up or do without them.

Hope this helps
