"unInstallShield in use" setup error

Attempting to install MicroStrategy Desktop 7.2.1 on Windows 2000 machine and get messagebox "Setup Initialization Error" text is "Setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close unInstallShield and restart setup. Error 432."
Nothing else is running except Windows explorer. Rebooting machine gives same result. Task Manager does not show any running task that is unambiguously unInstallShield. (What would that show as in TaskManager?)
A theory is that another installation of some other product may have left registry corrupt after an abend.
Any advice welcome, as enlightened management has declined to purchase support for this product.

Yikes, no support means no newer releases, or even online kbase. I haven't seen this so can't help. Sorry.

Yes, kbase is gone. But on the brite side, here I am at Tek-Tips!

I haven't seen it in relation to MSTR, but elsewhere.

Could be a couple of things:

The isuninst.exe file is corrupted somehow. This seems most likely to me - I guess you would delete all instances you can find (in windows, winnt, whatever) and run the install again.

This error will occur on some Windows systems if you do not have full administrative privileges. Log in to an account with administrative privileges.
