I have inherited an old pc which could be useful for my sons room but my problem is it takes at least two attempts to get started. It either freezes or occasionally restarts. When it is running it is rock solid with no problems.Specifications of the pc are
Dual boot os windows xp pro and 98
jetway 830ch m/b
1000 megahertz AMD Athlon
248 Megabytes Installed Memory
seagate ST320410A 20gb
ExcelStor Technology 40gb
Pioneer 104 dvdrw
DVD ROM
I upgraded the psu to qtec 550w dual fan

would be glad of any help

I would download the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for the mainboard and change the CMOS battery. In the BIOS, select "optimized settings". When troubleshooting hardware it is best to remove as many pices of hardware as possible, like one disc drive and one stick of memory.

my problem is it takes at least two attempts to get started

What happens the first time, when it does not start? Blue Screen? Error massage? BIOS message?

Hmmm? Jetway did suffer (as did so many) from the bad capacitor phenomenon of the early millenium.
Check out this site for a good description and guide:

Also an alternative could be a failing power supply.

Welcome to the Schonning v. Jetway Computer Corp.
Claims Administration Website
.
Description of the Action

The Class Representative in this Action alleges that Jetway Computer Corp. (“Jetway”) marketed and sold various models of its motherboards containing an allegedly defective component, namely, a capacitor which was prone to failure. Jetway has denied and continues to deny these allegations and would assert a number of affirmative defenses.

All persons and business entities in the United States who purchased during the period 1999 through 2004, at wholesale or retail, a Jetway Motherboard as determined by manufacture date codes on the motherboard for their own use and not for resale.
