I have an A7N8x deluxe version 1.04 and recently bought a mobile AMD Athlon 2800+ XP-M. My motherboard does not detect the CPU type so right now its running at about 1664.15mhz. I have the fsb running at 133, the multiplier at 12.5 (highest the motherboard will allow me) and the voltage at 1.65. I read that the multiplier should be 16x so will I not be able to run it at the full 2133mhz capacity? Would a bios update allow me further multiplier options? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for your help,

You should definitely try a BIOS update. It will probably correct the problem.

Hey guys, I'm certainly no expert with mobile CPU's but don't most work on a stepped clock speed system depending on CPU load?
I know some can report lower clock speeds because at idle they are effectively running at a percentage of there potential.
Not sure exactly how this applies to a 2.8+ XP-M

Alright, I just updated the bios again and it now works fine, I can once again change the fsb and multipliers. But I still can't get any multipliers past 12.5x to work (I need 16x). Any ideas anyone?????

Also, your 100% right paparazi about the clock speeds on the laptop, but as far as I know it does not effect the PC.

Also sorry for double posting, the acual thread is now here:

Just a stab in the dark but has this motherboard got FSB jumpers and are they manually set to 133?

With reference to the changing clock speed: It is the processor itself that controls this function and not the fact that it is installed in a laptop or desktop.

Ok thats for Intel, my LapTop has a p4M 1.8 Ghz processor, it actually outperforms a P4 3Ghz prescot. But when I check the processor speed it is anywhere between 400Mhz and 1.8 Ghz entirely depending on the work it does, test programs like Belarc or Aida give a very small load, in my case only 1.3% to the cpu, the processor steps right down to save battery power in a mobile application. If I have a heavy load like 80% or so running in the background the processor runs at 1.8 Ghz full speed. Why the M processor is as fast as a 3ghz P4 I really dont know. I do believe with your AMD M cpu similar things do take place. The cpu does not know or cares if it is in a mobile or fixed mainbord. The speed is internally selected depending on the load.

Thanks for all your help, I found many websites that say that I have to unlock the higher multiplier settings by sticking a copper wire into the socket, here is an example Do you think this will work? Is it worth the risk if any?

I have writen into Nforce and many other sites on the subject and they all recommended the copper wire trick. Besides if board croaks I have a K7S5A kicking around, and that 2800+ is on a 30 day warranty.

"sticking a bit of wire in" would not be the recommendation you would get from a professional site like TT.
As this forum is for computer professionals only, we would advise seeking the official CPU support list from Asus for this motherboard to see if this CPU is indeed supported or not.
