I am building a new PC
AMD 2400+
ECS L7VTA Motherboard
Radeon 9600 126MB AGP
120 GB Hitachi 180 GXP Hard Drive
Crucial 512Mb PC2700 DDR

After Fdisk when I try and load Win 98 or XP the OS fails, Win 98 freezes at Scandisk and XP reports unable to copy files.

On the L7VTA there are only 2 changeable switches one is the CMOS clear and the other is the FSB with 3 options 100/133/166 but the board does support upto AMD 3000+.

The PC loads and runs fine with the FSB set at 100Mhz but the Bios reads the CPU at 1500(approx). When I set the FSB to 133 the bios reads 2400 but the PC will not boot up. I have set the FSB in the Bios from 100 up to 133 and it works up to 122 but the Bios reads the CPU at 2200 on this setting and Win XP shows the CPU at 1800 (aaprox). I have tried 2 different memory modules and get the same results. Any ideas welcome

An XP2.4+ is a 266fsb CPU so the memory default needs to be 133, double data rate takes that upto 266 (effectively yor PC2700, 333 will be underclocked and thats fine)
The XP2.4+ actual clock speed is approx 2.0gig
Have you overheated the CPU at all? even for a few seconds?
Is the heatsink on the correct way (recess in heatsink base positioned over the socket "A" writing, if not the heatsink will not sit squarely on the CPU core causing it to overheat.
Once damaged some CPU will run but only at reduced clock speeds.

Since my first message, I have installed the CPU in a K7sa Motherboard and run it at 133Mhz and it runs ok. However the K7sa only supports lower CPU's. It ran ok but reported as a 2000+ in Bios ans 1995 in windows XP. I am now going to buy a new motherboard of a different make, one of the reasons for this is a problem posted by someone else states they have had trouble getting a memorex wireless mouse to work with my L7vta board, I also have this problem. I, like the other person have tried the mouse on another PC and it works fine, The only thing that concerns me is that when I removed the heatsink, it was on the wrong way, only making contact with the heat paste on 50% of the chip but the copper base of the heatsink was in contact with 100% of the CPU.

Don't quite understand that last statement? when the heatsink is on the wrong way around it usually only touches along one "EDGE" of the CPU so heat disipation is severely compromised.
Has it damaged the CPU? well, you'll just have to such it and see (use it and see if it runs at the correct settings without faults)

I have now obtained a new mainboard manufactured by MCI it cost me a little bit more but all my problems have gone away. My AMD 2400+ reads as a 2400+ in bios and Win XP and my cordless Memorex Mouse also works. In conclusion the ECS L7VTA board was faulty and would not run above 100Mhz (200Mhz) for the CPU. Also the board is incompatible with a Memorex RF Wireless mouse (as noted in another thread on this site.

Some computers can not handle Turbo Mode.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I have same system as yours.
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
ECS L7VTA
512MB DDR PC333
Thermaltake Vol 9

it works very smooth and fine. I didnt encounter any errors in my board nor in bios. ECS Boards is good for AMD. for my personal choice i go Gigabyte, ePox or ECS for AMD Processors.
