Am thinking of adding a new hard drive to my 3 year old Dell 450 Xps system. It came with a 12 gig hd, but they don't make them that small anymore [bigsmile]. I was thinking along the lines of 40-80 gig. Would there be any problem?

Put the question to the Dell forum a week ago, but no answer yet.

I was wondering along the lines of a bios upgrade in order to handle the larger disk. Any thoughts? PhiloVance

You may need to flash the BIOS to get the capability of a larger drive. Mine will accomodate up to 32GB but a flash is available to take it up to 75GB. Problem is, the BIOS update will have to come from Dell and they may no longer have it. Or maybe Phoenix will have it, since they make a lot of Dell's BIOSes, but don't count on it. Most BIOS makers don't sell direct to the end user. The BIOS is usually customized by the board maker.

You might try a 30GB to see if it can be recognized, but I think a 40 or larger may have a problem. A drive overlay used to work pretty good but the newer Operating Systems can have problems with it.

You can always invest in an ATA/100/133 PCI Controller Card later if the new drive has problems. Those PCI cards will usually run you between $30-40 retail online. Check under I/O for the latest.

Beware of OEM packages which rarely include any cables, software, or a manual... ~cdogg
