I had to move Exchange server from one machine to another. I added the new one to the "site", gave it several hours to do complete replication, moved the mailboxes to the new server. I shutdown the old machine and everything is working fine.
My dilemma is that when I run Backec Exec with the Exchange agent, the IS and DS backup fine with no reported error. When I try to back the mailboxes up individually I get the following output:

Backup started on 10/17/00 at 6:59:36 AM.

I get similar output for each user.
I do have a complete backup from the old server. The server itself was gutted and put to better use.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes Dan, my savior, there is only one. Your pointed me in the right direction. Luckily Exchange with this client has only been used for mail, calender, contacts etc. Hopefully, by simply following the folder rebuild directions linked to that article, as well as the original server removal instructions I can satisfy the needs of the backup program.

Question- Would I be better off restoring the old server from tape onto a spare box with original name and then follow the removal procedures? Would the mail clients be at risk of losing anything added since the first server was removed? or would replication simply update any new info to the old server before I go ahead and properly remove it?

Thanks again tremendously, and appreciate any guidance on further info.

If you could tell me how you implemented the second server and moved everything to it and removed the first I could give you a better answer. It sounds like you have several issues with things pointing to the old server. Have you went into Directory Service and did a consistency check? I think you can still do this with only one server that has been many moons ago :) So basically do the fix I have pointed you towards and then tell me what errors you have after that. Glad I could help... I just found this site today.

Thanks for the update. I'm heading out there on Thursday. I'll let you know how I make out.

Thanks again. [sig]
Al
atc-computing@home.com

[/sig]

I ran all the utils specked out in the MS articles. Still had the backup problems. Believe it or not it wound up being the fact that Backup Exec did not give the service account administrative permission in Exchange itself to have access to the Mailbox files!!! Once I added the account it was smooth sailing. [sig]
Al
atc-computing@home.com

[/sig]
