I am 44, A+, MCP Prof 2000 certified and am working toward MCSA certification. I work at the technical college I attended and teach beginning network specialist students keyboarding, MS Office 2000 and Intro to Computers. I work fulltime.

My intentions were upon graduation to begin working as a technician for a few years and then pursue network administration. But before I graduated they asked me to substitute for an ill instructor--based on my past experience with MS Office and typing. The instructor never returned to work.

So, I've been teaching for almost two years and I love it. The other instructors are MCSA and MCSE certified and have to recertify for 2003 courses. This summer we have time to study for exams, so I'll study for MCSA. I know I'll have to take the upgrade exam for 2003 also.

I would like to know if it is feasible for me to self study for MCDBA. I've always been interested in database design, but haven't had the opportunity to go to a four year college to study, and we don't offer it here now. Although I don't work directly with it, our school is migrating an Access database to SQL Server this summer. They are working on online registration and such.

I have been using a website for my courses for several semesters and also have an interested in CIW certification. I know it sounds like I have my plate full, but for the job market does MCSA & MCDBA look better then MCSA & CIW, or all three?

Short answer Yes, you can self study for MCDBA.

Long answer...

You didn't provide any details on your experence with SQL, SQL Server, Oracle, ETC... databases in general.

Have you setup SQL Server? Do you use it?

Get ahold of a few books and a copy of SQL Server from the website and see what ya can do.

It's good you have the teaching time!! Congratulations!!

Definitely build a home lab and "play around" with the tools--which Microsoft will sell you for a song since you're an educator...

Maybe you can even build them into your lesson plan at school??
