I went to the oracle db website and it is letting me download the oracle db ent edition. Im guessing ts downloadable but i still must may to use it (lic. fee).

Novell just got dropped by oracle and
has gone with postgresql.
I suggest you follow their example.
Oracle couldn't GIVE me products.

My .02.

I don't know anything about Oracle, but you are saying that you CAN download the fully functional, non-trial, software for free?

What do you have against Oracle? What would you use in its place?

Oh, anyone can download Oracle, and develop software with it to their heart's content, but when they acutally try to use it in production, the costs kick in. And they are heavy.

-marsd, sounds like you have had your fun with Oracle. Care to comment on why you prefer PostgreSQL? (I am a Postgres user too, but haven't done much with Oracle.) Seems awfully funny to me that to use Oracle, I need to download 3 CDs worth of data, while PostgreSQL provides all the logical relational querying capabilities, and equivalent performance for only a 9.5 MB download ;-). (Yes, I know there a couple more enterprise capabilities in Oracle, but really, 3 CD's worth?) -------------------------------------------

Im downloading the 3rd as we speak. I havent yet tried to install it yet. I have never tried PostgreSQL...whats the difference between PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft's SQL Server 2000. I only know MS. From what I heard Oracle runs best and fastest. Its also $500. per lic. if i remember correctly which leads me to beleive that you still have to pay for Oracle when you start using it "live".

The problem with oracle is exactly what rycamor has
commented on:
The costs of using their software are prohibitive, the
support is mediocre or plain bad, unless you are a big shop, and I had a bad experience with corruption several years (in a novell shop), that convinced me never to use oracle again.
Like I said, .02 cents, nothing definitive.

OTOH:
I've heard nothing but good things about the newest postgres. In 2000 ,I used it for a year and had no issues.

Now:
I don't even use the "big" db's anymore.
I play with metakit and berkeley DB (anything with a tcl
api) and enjoy myself a lot more ;)
