As you probably gathered, rpm stands for Redhat Package Manager and is the most widely used software package distribution system in the linux world. Almost all distributions use the rpm format except for debian and distros based on debian (corel linux, progeny, etc.) So a .rpm or .deb (for debian et al) file is roughly the linux equivalent of an installshield or similar install package in the M$ world.
