always popping up is "scanning message 1 of 1"

hi,

i've had my norton antivirus 2004 since january and just recently (well now july 04) it started popping up on the right hand corner the message: "scanning message 1 of 1" all the time even though my computer is not being actively used (just on and i see the screen).

i do not have any email program open nor am receiving anything.

can someone help me what changed or what i can do to stop it?
