HI All,

i am getting a bit bogged down in the documentation around always on failover cluster instances.

previously a sql server cluster had shared storage between the nodes for data, logs, backups etc.

always on is described as requiring 2 (or more) nodes with independent disks and the listener is is the connection and the WSFC looks after the rest.

always on failover cluster instances seems to be something a bit different. it is described as requiring shared storage but i thought the reason for always on was to eliminate the shared storage as a single point of failure.

am i right in thinking it is the same as the 'old' cluster model with shared storage but with the always on availability groups setup also?

Thanks in advance,

Niall
