Hi pamuditha,

what OS is installed on your computer ?
What type of drive is it (manufacturer/model)?

SteelBurner

Hi Steel Burner,
My OS is Win 98. I also have installed Win XP in other partition in this PC. There is no problem when working with it. Hard drive is a 10 GB Quantem IDE drive.
Thanks for your kind response.

What do you mean by "no visible work, scheduled tasks or programs running"? TigerFlight [tiger]
Everyone has their two cents worth. Lets all try to donate our two cents and maybe we all can come up with a Dollars worth of advice!!!!!

check to see if microsoft Find fast is installed, it normally comes with office. When the system is idle it tries to index files to make searching/findiing files quicker. This could be the cause of the harddrive being constantly in use.

One remote possibility (but worth mentioning) is trojan activity if you have a broadband 'always on' internet connection.
Perhaps install the free Zonealarm to lock out the possibility of this if no other suggestions work.
Someone could be scanning your drive........... My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Try hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager and see what programs are currently running.

or it could be virtual ram....if you have lots of programs open and not enough ram could it be a Virtual Ram issue? [soapbox]
sleep is good

It was already stated that nothing was running. Even though I did not get the response I was looking for. You need to go to thhe start button. Move up to run annd type in msconfig. Goto the startup tab and see what is set to start when windows starts. Let us know. You have to give us info if you want help. My bet is you have office installed. TigerFlight [tiger]
