alternatives to MS word?

Hi,

I have been trying to find an alternative to MS word since it refuses to open (when i open a document or it directly, it says enexpectedly quit before displaying, just after the splash! -any ideas) does anyone have any good suggestions.

I would like all of the layout, and compatiability of Word. I have tryed open Office, but since it runs under X11 it is a real pain for me to use, +i was hoping to find a less resource intensive app. i have tried lots, but none seem capable of seamlessly handling word docs.

TextEdit will open Word Docs, though not seamlessly if the document is more than just formatted text.

Also, suprisingly, Adobe Illustrator CS can open Word Docs. Retaining editablitly and styling. Not sure how it will handle placed objects though.

Or you could try getting hold of the most recent version of Word for Mac.

At the end of the day it depends on the complexity and content of the Word docs that you are working with.
