Alternative to MS ActiveSync

I was wondering if there were any alternatives to Microsoft ActiveSync? I have several users with iPAQs all using ActiveSync and all having no end of troubles. Surely somewhere, somebody has made an alternative product? I think everyone who has had the misfortune of dealing with ActiveSync knows that there must be a better way....
