All my attempts at downloading the JDK have corrupted in the process. :-(

Please can anyone recommend an alternative.

With thanks ...

Mo

Hi,

Maybe you want to browse it from the web instead? (don't quite like it but sometimes there are no choices)

Or try downloading through other FTP sites or using HTTP instead?

Regards,
Leon If you need additional help, you can email to me at zaoliang@hotmail.com I don't guaranty that I will be able to solve your problems but I will try my best :)

Hi Folks,

Many thanks for both your replies.

I've tried a couple of FTP sites, HTTP and another link I found. The problem seems to be the size combined with slow download - my ISP doesn't like large or snail pace and is breaking the connection anywhere between 50-90+% downloaded.

Looks like I'll have to put my hand in my pocket and check round for a copy of the Java JumpStart CD somewhere here in the UK ... but being a genetically programmed miser I liked the idea of a freebie!!!!!

Beta is at 1.4, the release is 1.3.something - these changes are minor. allow thyself to be the spark that lights the fire

Thanks for all the tips.

I hadn't picked up on the small bundles. I'll check that out first as it could well resolve the problem.

Tried for bundles, but as far as I could work out it seemed like it was only an earlier version that was bundled ...

But I have found myself a book complete with CD ...

and at a bargain price!!! LOL

Thanks again for all your help.

Mo,

I am in the UK (Stansted) and could put the zip on a CD for you for the cost of a blank CDR although if you have found a CD/Book at a reasonable price that would probably the best way to go.

wait wait wait wait wait!)

get a download manager. then, if your download stops halfway through, you can auto-resume, and the download manager will automatically start at the right place. This way, you can get the full thing. No need to actually spend money!)

I can't remember the name of the download manager I'm using now, I think it might be called "Download Accelerator Plus"... it's freeware. The nice thing about that is that it will set up approximately 4 connections to the host, so it will try and leverage your bandwidth (you can change these settings). Another one is called "Go!Zilla." Both are free and available easily at either ZDNet or Download.com. Perhaps the ONLY drawback is that they have advertising banners built in to the software, but that's a SMALL price to pay (compared to shipping+handling, etc!).

Best of luck!
Liam Morley

"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
light the world, and bring depth to the silence."

Many thanks for the offer, Adrian. It's very much appreciated. I'm not really mean, but when it comes to paying the earth for something that's available for free, Lancashire (Fleetwood) lasses can be as canny with cash as their Yorkshire neighbours!!! LOL

The CD with the book appears to be fine, so hopefully I'll not need to trouble you.

Thanks to you too, Liam, for the give-aways tips. Ad banners are no problem when they come at no charge! LOL

I've been using Go!Zilla for a couple of years, but it wont pick up the JDK. I'm guessing that's because of the Licence agreement integrated into the download?

I was interested in your comments about "Download Accelerator". As one or two people round here have recently switched to it from Go!Zilla and reckon it's better, I've been thinking of switching too. I'll now go right ahead.

If money could talk, it would say goodbye.

Ahh, you're right, Sun doesn't allow auto-resume at the moment. (I had a nasty bandwidth day the other day and had bad luck downloading, of all things, PDF files.) Download Accelerator claims to be able to sideskirt this by forcing auto-resume through the software rather than the server. I'm not sure how this is done.

In any case.. you say you found a book with a CD. That's good to hear ) best of luck..
Liam Morley

"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
light the world, and bring depth to the silence."

Thanks again.

I've downloaded Download Accelerator ... now with a fault on the line and my ISP playing up I can't download!!!

But I'm living in hope that it lives up to expectations! LOL
