This week's edition of Windows Secrets has an excellent article on how people can use Alternate Data Streams (ADS) for both legitimate and nefarious reasons. The article is titled Hide sensitive files with Alternate Data Streams by Scott Dunn.

You can use ADS to hide your sensitive data very easily but virus/spyware writers can also use ADS to hide their "scumware." This article give an overview and some tools on creating, reading, and finding those files.
