Is there a way to create a report and not let a person who has Crystal Reports on thier machine alter it? The person should be able to run the report and view it, but not alter it.

Thanks,
Clyde

As long as they don't have Crystal Reports design environment they can't modify it. You can compile reports (See the FAQ on compiled reports if you have V8) and the user can then run it from a shortcut, without needing the design environment.

Of course, if they buy CR they can always install it and modify the file. A compiled report still has the full RPT. Ken Hamady

clydejones:There is another much more secure way which will even prevent a user armed with a copy of CR from modifying your report and that is to use Crystal Info (or the shortly to be available) Crystal Enterprise. Both of these systems use the CR design engine (you can create reports in CR and use them in these) but have a security model which requires all users to login to get access to a report and will prevent any user to whom you do not give design rights from being able to run CR David C. David,

But if the RPT is copied to a PC that has regular CR installed, will regular CR be able to open and change the RPT? Ken Hamady

Ken: The answer is No. The rpt file is 'secured' and can only be opened once a user has logged into the Info/Enterprise APS on which it was created and they have designer status David C. Monks

Can the report be run from standalone CR?

Or do you have to run it from within the same Info APS as was used for the design? Ken Hamady

Ken: The report can be run from standalone CR but only if you can also log into the Info/Enterprise APS used for the original design.

This functionality assumes the designer has opted for a secured report at design time or that the report is based on an Info View otherwise the report will not open David C. Monks
