Alphabetical Incrimination. 1

As ‘increment’ is a mathematical term, what would be correct to step alphabetical characters?

Progression, causes me a similar issue as Icrement.

I'm currently using (incorrectly):

Alphabetically Increment Column Letter by + or - Value

Hmm ... Would index work here?

It always seemed that Crypotgraphers want to 'shift' through an alphabet. Shifting forward or backward.

Thus making my real name:

Step backward or forward through the alphabet by the + or - value.

Traverse backward or forward through the alphabet by the + or - value.

Personally, if it's obvious that you're scrolling the letters of the alphabet, I don't have a problem with either increment or decrement.

That being said, if you don't want to use those terms, what about 'scroll'?

cycle? Although I think increment is more descriptive. Twenty six letters starting with A is probably implied with most folks.

I'd lean towards increment or progress just to avoid the need of describing direction.

Not to mention the people using Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Indic, Kanji, ... alphabets / writing systems. (See
