We have an IP over Frame Relay WAN, on it sits an ALPHA server using OPEN VMS op.sys.
We have an NT4.0 server running Exchange 5.5 at another location on the network (300 miles apart acutally!)
Question : Can I send e-mails between the Alpha and Exchange
         : How ? What do I need ?

Great forum - this is my first question, hope someone can help

I'm not familiar with ALPHA, but as long as it supports SMTP or X400, Exchange can handle it. You'll need to install either the X400 connector or the Internet Mail Service, but that's pretty easy.
Mike Hillwig
mike@hypermike.com
<a href= done more R5 deployments than I care to think about.

I have same question that I've put to this group before, but haven't run across anyone using it. What I've been told is that if I configure my ALPHA (OpenVMS 7.2 - Multinet 4.2b) to point to my exchange server (IP#) then on my exchange server I setup smtp host as my ALPHA then I should be able (from the alpha) send to smtp%"whoever@wherever.com"... but I have not had luck. I'm sure it's something in my exchange configuration because I have tested hitting port 25 on my exchange server.

What is weird is that exchange asks for a domain for my smtp host. Well, my ALPHA is not in a domain - they don't play that.

Any ideas?

The "domain" it is referring to is the domain related to DNS. Let me understand the problem a little better. You have mail users on the alpha and you wish to send mail between alpha and exchange users, correct? Is internet based mail also needed here?

Yes, I have DECmail users on the ALPHA (just plain text - nothing fancy) that I want my users to be able to send to my exchange users and also out to the internet. It's not that important for them to be able to email to exchange users, the internet connectivity is really what I want for my ALPHA users.. plus, if they need to send to my exchange users then can use the internet address.

I'm suppose to setup this ALPHA in exchange as an SMTP host - but I'm not sure exactly how to do that.

Thanks for help... Julie
