Aloha XP Term install 1

I was asked to help a friend out with his Aloha system because I support PixelPoint systems. This is my first time seeing Aloha, and what a mess...First off He has a NT 4.0 server with 9 liscences. 7 terms are up and running fine. He merged his bar with a new tenant in the restaurant area who had 2 Radiant XP emmbedded terminals. I was asked to add these terminals to the system. Lets deal with one terminal at a time. First I got the terminal on the network and got the server accessing files and vise versa...Then I shared the c:\ on the Term as BOOTDRV and mapped a drive named z:\Alohaboh\bootdrv (I have read numerous posts here before I started) I made sure the only protocol that is installed is TCP/IP (no NetBUI). Then I went through the Z:\Alohaboh\bootdrv drive and found the TermInst folder and installed the terminal software, it installed fine without errors, asked for a reboot, but upon reboot, it can't find the file server. This was named Term8. I can go to the server and access term8 just fine. I see the bootdvr and can open the files just fine, but still term 8 can't find the file server. So I went one step farther, I disconnected the terminal from the network, did the prep work the exact same on my xp pro laptop, installed the software, upon reboot, it found the server just fine, with some errors, but reguardless, it found the fileserver. So whats up with the actual terminal not finding it??????Please some help if you can.....Thanks .....

Try adding the ip and server name to the host file on the XP terminal.....I would probably add all the terminals ips and name there too

Ok thanks, I will try that today and get back to you. I was there yesterday and made sure the xp terminal was registered on the NT server as a aloha user with the password of hello. When I logged on to windows on the xp term, I logged on to the aloha account with hello as password. I logged right in, but still no master or fileserver. One thing, the master defaulted to term2 because term 1 was not running, which is ok, but term2 is a windows 95 machine and I couldn't see that on the network from the xp machine. I edited the autoexec.bat file on term2 to false on the mster capable and false to server capable, did a reboot and term 3 defaulted as the master. I could access term3 from the xp machine fine, but did a reboot and still aloha couldn't find the master or server. Here is the debout file for the xp term....maybe this will help..... Can anyone read this debout file and tell me whats going on? And What is the right order to do a station install? Do you need an install disk or can you do it from the z:\alohaboh\bootdrv\terminst folder......Thanks

Your term install is fine. Do you have any other debouts for term3. Also maybe the debout for term2.

Check to make sure the lana number on the nic on the terminal is set to zero.

Make sure that Microsoft client access licenses (CALS) are not being violated. You get 10 on standard NT systems from what I recall. This is different than the Aloha license. This is the license that counts how many connections there can be to the server. Remember that some services will hold a connection, so having 9 computers could violate CALs.

You do need a HOST file on each unit and the fileserver because of the mixed OSs. Edit the HOST file and add the following information:

a.b.c.d ALOHABOH #PRE

Replace 'a.b.c.d' with you file server's IP address, and replace 'ALOHABOH' with your file server's network name. 'PRE' in #PRE must use capital letters. Save you changes, and restart the terminal.

Let us know if it does not come up ... there may be one or two more things to try.

Thanks alot alohatech2, I will pay a visit there today and do that stuff. I did get a copy of the DEBOUT from the master term yesterday. I did notice that there is also a DEBBAK file and log on all the win98 and 95 terminals, but not this xp term. Is that a problem? I know this is a long file and I apologize but here it is......Again thanks for all the help....

Well, I did what you said and I got it to connect to the server.....BUT I got an error that said Warning: Errors have occurred Please Check:

TERM1 IS DOWN
TERM2 IS DOWN
TERM3 IS DOWN
TERM5 IS DOWN
TERM7 IS DOWN

At that time Term2(win95) term3(win98) and ter5(win98) were the only terms up and running.......

The master is TERM3, but the error didn't mention it. On the bottom of the white screen it said "Master Down".......But the term was up and running....But the DOB was correct 1/22/09 and SysDate was correct 1/22/09.....

After that screen another said "Waiting For Master To Come Up"....

Well at least we got it to log on to the server.....What now???? Again thanks alot....

What kind of terminals do you have? SurePos 431's? or something else? You have to many different operating systems. Best practice is to get them all on the same level. or close. Try upgrading the win95 or win98 to win 2000.

I think if you do get the Xp up and running you will have problems down the road. Aloha's networking infrasteucture isnt that great, so you have to give it clear pipelines to work with. ie. the windows versions should have no problems talking to each other..

i had the same issue but backwards, was upgrading my BOH server from NT to 2003, all terms were win98, to fix it i upgraded all my terms to win2000, no problems

Thats is good advice. I told the owner that from the beginning. I will do that for him down the road, but right now I want to get these 2 xp terminals up and running. How do I get around that error screen???

I get that it is better to run an aloha system all on one OS, but I am a fan of "yes we can" - especially in the aloha world. There is rarely ever such a thing as "no." It may take a work around, but usually, it can be done.

So to that, I say make all terms but the XP terms mastercapable and servercapable FALSE. I think in mixed OS situations, XP likes to be "the boss."

Then turn off every single terminal. Bring uo one of the XP boxes first. Then turn on each other terminal in turn, waiting 60 seconds between each one. This is in an attempt to make sure nobody is determining master at the same time.

Get that far, tell me what the master terminal has for errors, and what the others have for errors. See who can see whom. Check network read/write capability from the master to each computer including the fileserver, and do the same in reverse. This is in an effort to fully checkout the network for any connectivity issues. If you get anyone asking for a login/password, enter it and select "remember" or whatever it is that will make it login every time.

Also, on the win98 and possibly the win95 terminals, you need tweakUI to get them to login properly. If you don't have that running, let me know and I will post those instructions.

If anything goofy happens, go ahead and include the master terminal debout. I will probably ask for that next if there are any errors.

First off, do NOT map a drive Z. This share is automatically created by the iber application (Or IBERQS if using quick serve) application. When the application is not active this share will usually remove also.

On an XP terminal, use simple file sharing and share the drive with full read/write and name the share, "BOOTDRV". -If you want user account security and such, wait until you get the POS working first for simplicity at this time.

There is absolutely NO problems mixing hardware / OS's. I am personally responsible for over 500 locations in my concept and this is absolutely not a problem. Using NT4 is probably nuts these days, but it will work, though not supported by Radiant either anymore (Same goes for Win98, but Win98 can still work just fine).

What would help me understand your issues better is to see a diag file if you could post one, or at least show me the environment on the backoffice computer and one register terminal (Run the SET command from a DOS shell and paste the results).

Also, what Aloha version are you using?

The time sync lines in the last debout you posted can be caused by the backoffice PC or Master terminal using FAT32 file system and everything else using NTFS or vice versa. FAT32 caches file datestamps where NTFS writes the info and eliminates this from practically ever happening.

From the backoffice computer, sign into Aloha Manager and go to UTILITIES / CREATE DIAGNOSTIC FILE.

the process may run anywhere from a minute to several, but will create a single zip file when finished in the %IBERDIR%\DIAG directory. This zip file will contain all the info about your installation. From that, I should be able to understand your settings better and give you a more useful answer to your problem.

Ok, I will go back today and do that. I did go there yesterday and did the other things you told me to do. Again, it connected to the server and I seen the business address and the DOB was correct, but still it said the master was down....So I made sure that this terminal (term8) was mastercapable, and turned all the other systems off, and turned term8 on first like alohatech2 suggested, then I turned the other terms on 2 minutes apart, but this one (term8) didn't become the master. So , I scratched my head and decided to try something....Since he was only running term2(win95) term3(win98 and master) and term5(win98) I decided to change the name of this station to a lower one, so I renamed it term1 and edited the IBER.bat to reflect the change, but it still did the same thing. It says on the white login screen at the bottom master down and when you put the managers number in it says "waiting for master to come up only managers may log in" but it doesn't let me log in...... I did a command set and copied the DEBOUT of term8, here they are...I will go back today and make the diag file for you...Again thank all of you for all this help, I really appriciate it.........
