I am guessing this is a pretty easy "yes" or "no" question.

Customer is running half off happy hour specials and the servers are getting inadvertently screwed by customers leaving tips on the "discounted" amount, rather than the full amount. (I know I just tip from the bottom # without thinking, so I have done it myself)

Is there a way in Aloha to say something to the effect "Please tip on this amount: " showing the full amount on the guest check?

Or does someone have an alternative suggestion?

Thanks!

You could use a comp or promo instead of changing the price at happy hour.

It usually isn't seen that way.
The bar set the price and the customer sees it as just another happy hour price and they tip on what they are charged, unlike if they were using a coupon or gift certificate.

Tipping area is flaky, I still don't understand why it has to do with check amount. Why should a waiter get a higher tip for bringing me more expensive food, when the waiter who brought me cheap food did the exact same job, 1 order, 2 tea refills, 1 trip with the food, 1 trip with the check. But that is the way it works, and so the staff will have to wait tables somewhere else where check averages are higher.

It's a "fairly" commonly known concept that in these cases, you tip on the full amount. The idea is, if the bar runs a special to bring in business, the waiter shouldn't really get screwed. But you could also make the argument that waiter might not even have the table to wait on without the discount to bring them in the door.

But I have had a number of people ask for this, and it looks like the answer is a guest check message when it comes to Aloha.

I do agree tipping based on price is a flawed concept to some extent. But generally speaking, the higher the bill, the more work the server probably did (but not always, I see your point) to server the table as whole (more food to run, more drink fills, etc).

I see your point though. Last Mothers Day I took a group of family members to a very fancy restaurant for brunch at $40 per person, buffet style. Needless to say, we more or less servered ourselves and all the server did was get drinks and the occassional item like a fork or napkin.
With the bill coming close to $300, I had a REALLY hard time leaving her a $50 or $60 tip for one of the lightess amounts of work I think I have ever put a server through. Even my girlfriend, who is a server herself, said $30 was plenty.
