Can an aloha terminal be set up over wifi? I want to set one up on the outside patio and be able to easily move it in and out every day. Obviously, the fewer wires the better. The terminal has wifi built in but it is currently wired. Any suggestions?

I recently set up a terminal with a net gear USB dongle.

The only issue was you have to set the lana number of the wifi adapter and protocol to 0 or the terminal will error out.

Do this using the program "Lanacfg" which may be on the terminal or you may need to DL it from the net.

I don't remember the commands you pass it but its pretty straight forward, you swap whatever the lana number of the wifi is for 0.

Thanks DoomCryer, now step 2: After doing some research it seems as if I can't do this in XP. Do you know anything about this?

To the OP:
I found my copy of the lanacfg.exe on the E: drive of the BOH server in a folder called "MatrixUtilities" (Matrix is/was the local dealer here) so check that out if you havent already...On my system, theres a TON of goodies there and in "AlohaUtilities", even some I cant legally use (they stuck the UNPAID FOR add-ons in there :p ) Also make sure you get the XP version of Lanacfg.exe.

To anyone else:
Is CCards over wifi COMPLETELY against PCI or is it OK if its encrypted via WEP 128 or WPA?

Any links for the PCI compliance?

Also what is the deadline for PCI compliance with the Processors, etc?

We're running Aloha 5.3, so I KNOW we're not compliant already, whats the lowest version that is PCI?

What prevents you from upgrading to a compliant version? With the software membership it's free. Upgrade asap. With wireless I believe 128 and WPA are not enough, WPA2 is needed.

We are processing credit cards- the plan is to go with WPA2 if we ever get this going.

Wifi seems convenient, but don't do your POS traffic on it. Especially if you are asking how, then your setup isn't safe enough to begin with.

Using a PCI compliant version of Aloha also doesn't make you compliant. It just means the software has passed the testing and contains the methods needed to be compliant. How you implement and operate determines the rest.

-Nothing personal, but I'm not knowingly going to use my credit card in any place that is going to swipe my credit card on an internet facing POS system with wifi.
