I was wondering if someone could explain how permissions work in an aloha POS envirorment. Does the server software handle this, or do you use windows server 2000/2003 to set the permissions? I apologize for such a basic question, but i can't seem to find this answer anywhere. This is for a possible job opportunity, so i'm just trying to get a better understanding of the network before the interview. you guys are pretty much my last resort. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this.

If you're talking strictly network, the permissions are set by the user for communication between computers. Aloha will basically share the hard drive as a share called BOOTDRV during installs, you have to make sure everything else is correct. If you're talking about permissions for users in Aloha itself, that is handled by the Aloha POS software.

They do not always use Server software. The server could and most times only be XPpro or 2000. Then they just all log on with the same user name that is a member of the administrators group. Actual user permissions from the terminals aren't that relevant because the users can not exit the software to a desktop to do anything.

I agree with other two short posts-in most environments, there is nothing complicated about the windows persmissions as they pertain to Aloha.

From a practical perspective (and not a solely technical one), just make sure that:

1) The front of house stations are logging on to Windows with the same user name a password

and

2) That the back office contains a user account with the same user name and password (though the back office doesn't have to be logged on to that desktop in order for this to work).

As the previous posts indicated, the root drives of all these stations are shared as bootdrv-these accounts have full access to this drive, and as Bo said, I usually handle that by making those accounts Administrators.

Thanks guys.. It's starting to make more sense now. Wow, this could be alot easier then I thought. I guess I gotta just get out of the active directory mind set.=) Thanks again for the help and have a great day.
