Aloha Custom Checkout Help Please

Why this is not working.
I am using the expression <VAR(6:$S*0.015)> in my checkout.cfg file and the text before the calculatiuon prints but where the result of the equation should be there is nothing, just a blank spot.

By the way it is in version 5.3.41

Try this out

<VAL(7:$S*0.015)>

To be quite honest, I am not sure what the difference is between VAR & VAL, and 6: & 7:. But, my checkout.cfg file uses <VAL(7: preceeding all equations.
