No bigge, just curious about this one:

Way back in the day, Ibertech was pretty adamant about routers not being used to network the Aloha system--they wanted workgroup hubs only. Let me say I have used routers on a few occassions, and have never had a problem with them (at least not that I know of).

My questions is, has this policy changed? Are you guys more or less using routers on all your installs? Any brand to stay away from?

I ask because I still use workgroup hubs when possible, but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Thanks in advance.

I use routers when they don't have one for there high speed or if they have a wireless setup for their patrons (firewall against wireless intruders). I mainly use Linksys, but have also used Actiontec, D-link, Zoom, etc. without any problems.

I think they were saying that the entire system had to be on the same workgroup and will not work right if spaned acorss different workgroups on a domain. It can be done but not worth the time and trouble. And that they suggest static IPs and not obtains.

Bo, you may be right. I was never sure of the specifics, but I did hear from a pretty knowledgable Aloha dude (again, 3 or more years ago) that you weren't supposed to use routers or even switches. I also usually stick with linksys, and haven't had a problems (once again, that I know of). Eventually,
I ended up trying a switch our of sheer neccessity, and then on other occassions, used a router with clients who already had them. Just thougt I'd ask. Thanks guys!

3 or 4 years ago all this was true.
The problem with routers was Aloha did not want resellers to use DHCP. Switches at the time could cause network problems due to speed issues. None of this really applies any more and I exclusivley use routers with built in switches. This makes it much easier if a customer decides to add DSL..
I use Linksys because it has the Cycso logo which makes everyone feel all warm and fuzzy. Personally I don't like them due to having to use a static IP address to NAT pcAnyhwere or VNC...
