I have an IPO R.11 with IP handsets. It has been in service for years. About 2 weeks ago the users intermittently started losing audio on internal calls. Allow Direct Media Path was checked, and today we unchecked it. To our surprise, the audio issue seems to be resolved. What the heck? Why would this be? Usually checking that box is the solution, not unchecking it.

No. Usually unchecking it will fix network issues as it forces the call to be routed and controlled by the IPO. Allow direct media path allows the phones to talk directly to each other. If there are network routing issues and such they won't be able to negotiate a direct data path. I would be looking to see what has changed in your network.

This is usually a result of a change to a network router.
The IP Office didn't change. The network did.

The customer swears up and down that nothing changed. The phone system is on a dedicated network with nothing else running on the switches. We'll look at them and in the meantime be glad the issue is resolved for now.

An network update to the firmware on the switches? Something changed.
