Allocation Unit Size

May be its a silly question, still... While choosing Format option of a drive, we have a option of selecting Allocation Unit Size. Usually we use only the default allocation size, but what does this 512 bytes, 1024 bytes ,.... (while choosing NTFS File system) mean. And what will happen if i choose that?.
