when i play any video file (avi, wmv, mpeg, vcd, etc.) it's almost impossible to see the picture because it's very dark. ive adjusted the monitors contrast and brightness control - no luck. adjusted the video card's gamma/brightness - no luck too. almost all windows is completely white due to these adjustments but the playback is still so dark. also, i noticed that when i switch from media player to another windows, say explorer, and return to media player, video brightness is ok for a few seconds but will again just return to "darkness". can anyone please help me with this? thanks in advanced...

What is your video card? This has to do with driver settings, or even maybe BIOS settings in your video card. Some drivers just wrongly assume that video playback programs are displaying correctly (like ATI,s) and will not allow you to play with the image controls, unless you use hotkeys.

O.k just a question you have tried your monitor on another machine, its entirely possible the monitor is playing up, I had a similar problem that got progressively worse and in the end turned out the monitor was going down the pan to that great electronics dump in the sky.

apologies for the very late reply.
What is your video card?
my vid card is an nVidia GeForce2 MX 100/200.

There's nothing in your drivers/utilities that talks about "overlay" controls"? This is what makes the difference between the video window intensity and the rest of the desktop.
