Hello,
I have 1 user when he opens more than one excel spreadsheet they all open in one window with only 1 Excel icon on the taskbar. IN order to work on multiple sheets at one time is terribly difficuly. I have tried going to TOOLS >> OPTIONS >> VIEW >> Windows in Taskbar. This procedure works on every other machine except for this one. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall with no luck. He is Running winnt40.0 SP6. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I hope these are adequate solutions to your 2 problems:

1) Opening of files in "one" window: Have the user "maximize" the first file opened. Subsequent files should then ALSO become maximized. Then to navigate from one file to another, use "Control-Tab".

2) As for the one Excel icon, this can easily be corrected by "right-clicking" on the toolbar, or by selecting "Tools Customize". You can then check off "existing" toolbars you would like to "restore", or you can add additional customized toolbars - by selecting "new". Drag the new toolbar bar up to the top of the screen. Then choose the commands you want from the entire list of "Commands", and drag and drop them to the new toolbar.

STRONG RECOMMENDATION ...that you complete the "customization process" by doing the following: After you have added the commands to your customized toolbar(s) and you are still in "Customize mode", "right-click" on each icon, and choose "Text Only (Always)". Then abbreviate the "Name" (3rd item from the top of the dropdown). Abbreviation is important if you have added several icons which you need to "fit in".

Most importantly, you should add "hot keys" (or short cuts) to your icons. Do this by moving the "&" character and using it with other keyboard characters such as [ ] \ / - + * ` . , (you are not limited by the alphabet). As you probably are already aware, these hot keys can be activated by holding down the "Alt" key and hitting the character which follows the "&" character. (These characters are displayed with an underline).

For example, I have hot keys for: Row Height: Alt H, Column Width: Alt W, Page Setup: Alt P, Print Preview: Alt \, Increase Font: Alt +, Decrease Font: Alt -, Zoom In: Alt /, Zoom Out: Alt *, Merge Cells: Alt M, Un-Merge Cells: Alt N, Group Cells: Alt G, Un-Group Cells: Alt U. This is still not the complete list, but it should give you some food for thought.

A final comment: For anyone using Excel to any reasonable extent, the use of these short-cut keys will made a CONSIDERABLE difference in their ability to perform their work QUICKLY. Once they get familiar with the short cuts, they will find that they will be able to VASTLY outperform others who "PLAY with that SLOW moving object called the MOUSE". Use of the mouse is not only slower, but it REMOVES the hand from the keyboard, which also contributes to a MUCH SLOWER process.

I hope this has been helpful and informative.

Thank you for all of your contributions, M.S. says in article q215816 that there is a problem with the Windows Desktop and that I must install the Windows Desktop Upgrade. My next problem is Where can I find the Windows Desktop Upgrade they say to uninstall IE 5.0 Install IE 4.01 SP1 install Windows Desktop Upgrade and the reinstall IE 5.0. Does this sound a little crazy to anyone else. First of all I can find for IE versions is 5.5 on M.S. website. So if anyone has any other idea on how to fix this please let me know.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

After reading your last reply, I quickly re-read your initial question and realized that you had referred to "taskbar", whereas I "misread" it to mean "toolbar". BIG oversight on my part. My apologies for that.

Anyway, I hope you and others will still appreciate the "side-track" I took on "toolbars" and the potential to customize and automate them with "short-cuts".

It Was necessary to install the desktop upgrade for IE. Long process. Uninstall Office 2000 uninstall IE 5.0 install IE 4.0 with Desktop Update then re-install office 2000 and IE 5.0. Works fine not but what a Pain.
