I tried to run the defragmenter, and received the message:

"Disk Defragmenter cannot continue prescan because there is a corruption in file: C:\Program Files\Messenger"

After poking about through Google, I ran chkdsk from the command prompt:

[tt]The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume [volume] created 8/13/2004 4:58 PM
Volume Serial Number is [serialnum]
Windows is verifying files and folders...
Error reading folder (null).[/tt]

I went to the Event Viewer's System logs, and the most recent one said:

Event 7, from Disk
The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

I've set the chkdsk to run after reboot, which I'll be doing in a half hour, when I go on lunch. Is there anything else I should do?

Device hard disk has a bad block? Which drive ?

I would take a look at spinrite v6 from grc.com this is a great utility for hard drive recovery including moving of
data from a bad block to a good one. It does take some time to check out the drive but it's worth it.
