Hi,

I am new to the TekTips forum and hope someone can help.

Recently a friend brought a laptop to me which had a virus.
He had already cleaned the virus and unfortunately didnt bother to write down the name of it :-(

The problem we have is that though the virus seems to be gone when we try and create shortcuts they always point to Word.

Can anyone tell me where the program or registry setting is for creating shortcuts as i believe that must be where the remnant corruption lies....

or...are there any other suggestions?

Thanx in advance

Hiya,

Yep...tried what you suggested but no change.

Thanx anyway :)

I am assuming at this point that it is a registry entry problem as regardless of how i create a shortcut it creats a word icon and opens word.

However....when I look at the properties of a shortcut the path looks correct...weird...have never come across this before.

Unfortunately I am far from familiar with registry entries.

Any other suggestions....

Hey All,

Many thanks for your assistance, I have finally found the problem.

FYI

The virus created an association in Folder Options/File Types for the *.LNK file used by shortcuts

My method of repair was simple:
I deleted the association ( this stopped the shortcut option from operating at all )
I then rebboted using a XP CD and repaired the system through the install XP option ( NOT the repair console )

This not only repaired the shortcut process but also repaired the corrupted shortcuts on the desktop.

Again I thank you all for your help :)

Star for you on posting that. Good information to know. Thank you for putting down what fixed the problem. Many people never say so we are left wondering lol.
