I have a 3COM SuperStack II 3300 24 port switch that works ok for a while then all of the lights on the front light up except for one port blinking which is random!

The activity on the network is halted and you have to power down the switch for a while (it's not getting that hot and the fans are working)...

Any ideas???

thanks!

Jay, MCP

You might want to try and manage this Switch if you haven't already. The web interface has a graphical display of all the switch ports and could show if there is a problem or not. I have to copy the 3com instructions into this call because they don't have it as a URL. Anyway set up an IP on the switch and then put that IP in a web browser and you'll have the graphical interface. Here is the instructions:

To manage a Switch over the network, using either its command line or web interface, you must first set up the Switch with IP information.
To access the switch console port do the following:
1. Connect a null modem cable to the console port of the unit and to a PC as described in the User Guide. Use your own null modem cable or obtain a SuperStack II Switch console cable by contacting 3Com RMA and order part # 07-0306-000. This is a 9-pin female to 9-pin female console cable.
2. Open a Hyperterminal session with the following settings:
Specify the proper COM port
Baud = 9600
Data Bits = 8
Parity = None
Stop Bit = 1
Flow Control = NONE
Emulation = VT100
NOTE: If this above steps fail to gain access to the console port then check that the correct COM port is selected in the terminal program and check the null modem cable by following the steps in solution How to check the pin-outs of a Null Modem cable To check the pin outs of the null modem cable, Click here 3. Hit "Enter" twice to obtain the switch management logon screen
4. Login as admin with no password.
5. At the prompt type "IP interface define"
6. You will then be prompted for the following details:
a) Enter IP address [0.0.0.0]: Enter a valid IP address.
b) Enter subnet mask [0.0.0.0]: Enter a subnet mask, if required.
c) Enter default gateway [0.0.0.0]:
d) Enter SLIP address [192.168.101.1]: We recommend that you use the default address 192.168.101.1 (Press the Enter key)
e) Enter SLIP subnet mask [255.255.255.0]: Again, the default is recommended (Press the Enter key)
7. You should now be able to connect to the switch via Web Management or Telnet

Fix: Alternately to using a terminal program to access the console port, the web interface of a switch without an IP address can be access if it is matrixed with one that does have an IP address. Log into the web interface of the switch that has an IP address first and then click the Unit icon on the left to gain access to the switch that needs an IP address. Once access is gained to Web interface of the unaddressed switch, an IP address can then be assigned to it.
NOTE: For switches with different firmware versions the web pages may be missing images needed to configure the second switch.
In this situation use telnet instead of the web interface:

* From the command prompt telnet to the IP of the addressed switch; login.
* On the Menu Title Bar it will state the switch type and the Unit number in brackets.
For example: ---------Switch 3300 (1)----------------
* From the prompt enter "system unit 2" (or 1 if the addressed switch is Unit 2.), hit Enter.
* Now the Menu Title bar should indicate the interface of the unaddressed unit.
* From the prompt enter "IP interface define"
* You will then be prompted for the following details:
a) Enter IP address [0.0.0.0]: Enter a valid IP address.
b) Enter subnet mask [0.0.0.0]: Enter a subnet mask, if required.
c) Enter default gateway [0.0.0.0]:
d) Enter SLIP address [192.168.101.1]: We recommend that you use the default address 192.168.101.1 (Press the Enter key)
e) Enter SLIP subnet mask [255.255.255.0]: Again, the default is recommended (Press the Enter key)

You should now be able to connect to the switch via Web Management or Telnet.

I just did this the other day. It's pretty fly. Good luck.

I already tried managing it, upgrading the firmware, etc... I sent it to 3COM 2 months ago and they sent me a back SuperStack III instead so it must have been really bad... They have lifetime warranties for the original owner of them...

thanks anyways!
