I am at a loss as to how I sort this out.

Every time anyone sends a mail the get it returned with the following error.

"Error transferring to ***.***.***.***; Maximum hop count exceeded. Message probably in a routing loop"

Or occationaly

"SMTP protocol returned permenant error 550 relaying denied"

Please help :(

Hi Manic.

Do you have more than 1 servers?

If you do, and you have the address book replictaing you may have modified the home/mail server for an entry (user), to be the other server, and the address book is not yet - forced to replicate accross the servers

Or (and more likely) might be some forwarding set up - from one account to another, and from the second account to the first one which has forwarding to the second one etc. etc...

Something is making it loop though... send out, come back at which point it sends out again.

Sorry I can't be of more help

Thanks Gonzo,

Managed to get it sorted.

The AV mail scan got confused and started sending mail back to the mail server rather then on to the firewall, then out to the world.

Apparently this is a common fault.
