Greetings Everyone!

I'm looking for an all inclusive Windows Tweak Guide. I don't want to trust a program to do it for me. I know there is a ton of crap in Windows that is just not needed. I would like to see a list of things that the real pros here think is BS.

Well most stuff I know ive learned from other users or trial and error. As for a single guide for tweaking windows or modifying it, I dont know of one. Either way ill post some things that I know and use.

Msconfig

Make Windows shutdown faster (this stuff I think I got off someone from here)

Go to start, run, type in regedit. Click edit, then find, search for autoendtask. Right click on its value and change from 0 to 1.

On the same page, find hungapptimeout, remove a 0 from its value.

Do the same with waittokilltimeout. remove a 0 from its value.

Windows xp services

Also a site useful for figuring out what things are listed in msconfig and hijackthis logs

If you could post details on things you are actually wanting we can be more directful at sending you to the right sites.

Hi,

Ive found the best thing to do is to make the page file contigious.

I do this by

Right Click "My Computer"

Properties

Advanced

In the performance box click settings

Advanced

Click Change.

Then change both the max and min values to 1.5 times the physical amount of RAM you have IE, if you have 1Gb values should be

1024 * 1.5 = 1536

Reboot when asked.

If aint broken, dont try n fix it!!!!!

Basically after I install XP (Retail, as I never purchase preloaded, junk filled, factory manufactured machines), I run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, create a start up batch file to keep Temp files under control and leave it at that.

Preloaded machines can benefit from something like this.
The PC Decrapifier (originally titled, Introducing the Dell De-Crapifier…)

If you must tweak, then this is a highly recommended program, in my opinion.

This is handy to know too.
Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP

is the best information that you will ever find on tweaking, plus the fact is that you can see what and how it will get tweaked, ie. what registry change will be made or what service will be turned off, if you look deep enough...

speaking about services:

is about the most comprehensive information you will ever find...
