Using Modular ICS with 7310 Phone sets. After lightning storm, system is inactive. All line indicators on all (10) handsets are flashing. All incoming lines are busy. If the system is off, incoming lines behave normal.

Is this a reset type problem or indicator of bad hardware somewhere? I have been through the manual and this forum but can not find an answer.

Thank you for any input.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE ONE STUPID SWITCH, IF YOU POWER OFF AND THEN ON AND SYSTEM DOESN'T COME UP TRY GOING TO A 7310 OR 7324 AND DOING A **STARTUP PASSWORD IS 266344. IF YOU GET NOTHING MY SUGGESTION IS IF YOU HAVE A BOAT YOU NOW HAVE A BOAT ANCHOR.
BUT IF YOU GET A RESPONSE SIT DOWN AND START REPROGRAMING YOUR SWITCH

I ever had this problem.

You can try to open your KSU and short the condensator (battery 5 volts 1.uf) and restart your system.

It will flush all memory on your system and it can restart again maybe... If not...

Try a other software...

or else buy a rope and make a beautiful Anchor. It will never rust...

Good luck!!!

The way to go is to do a system startup and try to program the switch again. If that doesn't work, you could try another software card, but chances are the system is toast.

Lightning probably fried the KSU, but in case it's just scrambled try inserting a lower level software than you now have. If the KSU is still good it should come up in default mode. Then power off, reinsert the original software and see if the system will boot. If so then start programming, unless you backed up your database.

If you don't have access to alternate software go with the suggestion to open up the KSU and short out the memory cap on the main board to flush the programming. The cap is black, about the size of a quarter.

Did you get this sorted out? Was the KSU on a UPS/surge supressor? I get to hear so infrequently how lightning was able to affect a switch, so i'm interested. Did the lightning arrestors on the telco demark take a hit? I'm interested in the dead KSU if thats possible - to learn how lightning directly affects systems - so I can more effectively protect them. I've set up a temp email account nutbar at telus dot net if you are interested / able to get rid of the zapped unit. I'm most interested in how the lightning got in.
Thanks

I have no idea how to find the condensator on the KSU. Called in a Nortel vendor. Vendor says appears the system is dead and the handsets too since they are not responding as expected. That sounds unusual. He mentioned something about the phone lines not being grounded properly. The building is an older one. Older home converted to multiple offices. Not sure how good the Telco demarc is. Can't even find it to check lightning arrestors.

Is the vendor blowing smoke trying to sell a new system?

System is on an APC Backup/surge suppressor.

The lines themselves aren't grounded, but the lightning arrestors need to be or they won't work. I've seen them installed in basements, but if its an old house converted to offices, its possible they were removed or rendered useless if the ground connection was cut, or worse - closed in the walls where they can't be serviced. On the older carbon type or coil type arrestors, once they have been hit - they need to be replaced. The newer Gas type dont usually need replacing unless they had a direct hit - causing physical damage due to arcing or heat.
I think saying the sets are also NFG is a little premature, unless you've tried another KSU but its possible...
If you can't find the lightning arrestors, you might want to get your Telco to install new ones at the cable entrance.
