Is there no way to designate the position of an object relative to a page or column margin?? No way to align an object e.g. centered in the column margins of a column e.g. I'm not talking about the margins of a text box and I'm not talking about anchored object.

For instance, place a text box on a page. What tool is used to designate the position of that object relative to the page margins?

You should check Indesign help for info on Guides and Snap To guides.

In prefs you have to set a "snap to" zone - how far away from a guide an object is, in pixels, from the guide when it snaps to the guide.

In the View menu, enable Snap to Guides (or doc grid if you want)

Guides can be created relative to page or margins - Layout menu/create guides. In options, select relative to page or margins.

There are many more options with guides (a very old alignment method in vector apps for aligning objects)but the above give you what you want. Read up on guides in Help.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Your ID installation disc has nice scripts to do a lot of good stuff, including alignment to page (AlignToPage.jsx) Copy scrips to Presets/Scripts folder, open Scripts pallette from Window-Automation-Scripts meny and enjoy
