I was just reading a company document on Sexual Harassment, and in the list of things that you are not allow to harass or discriminate against someone is their "Alienage".

That kind of stood out as an odd way to put it.

Hi,
In an era when immigrants are under suspicion ( for being here illegally) it is important to prohibit harassment because they are not citizens.
Harassment policys will use the legal terminology instead of saying foreigners.

Yes, it does sound odd, but grammatically, there is nothing wrong with it.

But if I refuse to hire a Ferengi, am I violating company policy?

Still, "Alienage" seems a little vague to me. Does that mean just the fact that they are from another country, or is it something to do with their visa status? I believe there are several other items on the list that refer to ancestry and country of origin. So, not only was it an odd way to state it, but I wasn't quite clear on what I wasn't supposed to be biased on.

I still won't hire no stinkin' Ferengi!

I assert that "ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status" is more clear than "alienage". (It sounds like a contrived or made-up word.)

Many words in American English sound made-up. :)

I have an odd question.

How can you get in trouble for sexually harassing someone who isn't legally allowed to work at your workplace?

A lack of experience doesn't prevent you from doing a good job.

AFAIK, perpetrating an illegal act on someone who is perpetrating an illegal act, does not make either act any less illegal, right? <grin>

Yes, but would your employeer come after you for sexual harassment if you were going to rat him out for hiring illegals, and probably not paying taxes on them?

Not all aliens ( or even most)are here illegally, and it would not matter - that they are employed in your workplace entitles them to the same protection as all other employees ( the employer, by hiring an illegal, is the issue not the person trying to work, but very few employers are ever punished, so they keep using powerless folks to fill their needs)

Does this go back to the type of thinking that lets robbers sue people for get hurt in the house they were robbing?

I'm not saying i'm crossing any lines here, but at some point we should at least draw a couple.

It is a weird word.

It's a great question, but this isn't the right forum for that discussion. forum1229 is better suited for that topic.
