Does anyone know how i can receive an email when the server goes down? I was thinking about something like another remote server pings every 1/2 hour the other server, and if the other server is unreachable, then an email is sent out.

any ideas on how to receive emails about a server being down?

thanks

what brand of server do you have?

for example, we have HP servers and they offer the System Insight Manager software. It will ping designated servers every so often, and it will email when the ping response fails.

There is also 3rd party software such as NetIQ which can ping or do more in depth monitoring/alerting

you will need to setup a monitoring system it can be just a stable workstation or another server depending on your resources.. this other system can run KIWI syslog and you can setup that to monitor via snmp servers and network devices and have it email you when a device fails to respond, it can also provide something approximating the time of outage with its last query time/date stamp.

If your willing to purchase a montioring software, you can buy the NETIQ as mention above tho it is WAY over priced.. when there are products that are just as efficient such as whatsup gold that can give you more versatility in the monitoring, by ports, ip .. services etc..

goodluck.
