Hi,

I have set an alert on a MS word document for 'All Changes' and notified
immediately. I am getting alerts when the document is changed if i follow the
procedure below.

1. Checkout the document.
2. Edit the document in MS word 2003
3. Do some changes and save.
4. Checkin the document.

But i am not getting the alert, if i do the following.

1. Click on 'Edit the document in MS word'
2. Do the changes and save.
(There is no checkout and checkin. I could able to save and i could see the
changes.)

Any reasons?

Thanks
Gane

Is this on a SPS or WSS? Reason been that the 2 use different processes.

we have the SPS. This document doesn't exists in the main portal site.
The document exists in a subsite inside a site collection.

Its an interesting one, I've been to alert hell and back with SPS alerts. The first thing to check would be that your search works from a site (not the portal) if it doesnt, go to SPS Admin, click on Windows Sharepoint Services on the left and then click the configure Full Text Search link. It needs to be ticked, if it is already, untick it and apply then tick it and apply it. Also on the same page check the default email settings it can differ from the Portal settings.

Next thing is check the event logs for Event 537 if you have that you might need Win2k3 SP1 - backup before doing a service pack.

Check your services, the MSSearch especially but given that it works sometimes, I think it might be the Full Text Search thing, worth doing definetly.

Sorr should of asked do the Portal alerts work?

I think it is because of the Dec 04 service pack post hotfix, I applied. there is a post hotfix on apr '05 KB897329 MS mentions that. SP2 is available now. Anyways i need to verify that.
